5 beginner baritone ukuleles

Lately I've been thinking a lot about baritone ukuleles.  About 10 years ago, I walked into a music shop in the Kansas City area and found a lonely baritone.  It was used and slightly beat up with a price tag of only $20.  I, of course, took it home with me and it was a real joy to play.  Not knowing a whole lot about ukuleles at the time, I honestly don't remember the brand.  That ukulele ended up in the closet at some point.  It eventually ended up being sold in a garage sale.  Any time I've sold an instrument I always end up regretting it.

Anyway, I'm starting to think about buying another baritone uke.  There's a lot of great entry level models out there that won't break the bank.  So if you're thinking about getting into the world of baritones, here's 5 starters to consider.

 Lanikai LU-21B Baritone Ukulele

I actually have the concert ukulele from the LU-21 series and it's a fine instrument.  I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger and grab this baritone from that series.  You can get one new for around $100.  These also come up
frequently on ebay for around half that price, so keep an eye out there.

Kala KA-MK-B Baritone Ukulele

Kala is a very respected uke producer.  This entry level baritone carries their name as well as the name of their cheaper line, Makala.  The $80 price tag makes this one an all around good deal.  I've watched several Youtube clips with this uke and it sounds way better than the price tag would lead you to believe.

Oscar Schmidt OU52 Baritone Ukulele

Don't know a whole lot about OS ukes, but taking a look at some of the Amazon reviews for this one, it seems that people are quite happy with this baritone uke.  Right now, you can grab it for $90.

Rogue Baritone Ukulele

One of the least expensive bari ukes on the market.  They are definitely not precision instruments and with a $35 price tag I'm willing to bet that they won't come to you set up and in ready to play condition, so keep that in mind.  As with anything, you get what you pay for.  Could be a good option for a young player.  Amazon reviews are mixed on this one, from those that sing it's praise to those that tossed it in the trash.

 Vintage Harmony Baritone Ukulele

Hey, don't count out the old guys!  These vintage Harmony Baritone Ukes are great players.  A lot of them are solid mahogany and most Harmony baritone owners are absolutely in LOVE with them.  You can regularly find these popping up on ebay.  While some of them drift towards the $200 mark, you can find some around $100.

  1. Hi there,
I like Lanikai Ukuleles very much. Especially the ukes of the Curly Koa Series. I own the LANIKAI Baritone Ukulele CKTU-B and I'm very happy with it. Great, overwhelming sound -- and vibrations you feel in your whole body. It's a great experience to play that uke.

  2. ADM Soprano Ukulele from Bizarkdeal
    Less than $30

I love this ukulele and it's perfect for my daughter! She's been wanting one just like her grandpa and this definitely was the highlight of her day. I love the baby blue color and the fact that everything was included with this order. The tuner works great but the only issue I had was that the back piece that covers battery, wouldn't fit on there properly once the battery was in it. I had to rig that shut, but it didn't effect the function of the tuner. We are very thankful that this was included because the ukulele definitely needed tuning and I would t of known how to do it without it. The strap, guitar picks and extra replacement string is also a huge deal for us. With my daughter being a beginner, having these extra backups are always a plus. The size is perfect and it seems to be made with top quality materials and built to last. I'm very pleased with the appearance, sound and functionality of everything included in our order and we look forward to the beautiful music that my daughter will learn to make with her new ukulele!
